Conflict is an essential element of any story, as it creates suspense and excitement and engages the audience. 

Conflict can take many forms, and the new infographic from The Learning Exchange blog lists the most common types:

Character vs. Self – Internal struggle within the protagonist 

Character vs. Character – Conflict between two or more characters 

Character vs. Nature – Conflict between protagonist and nature or elements of the environment

Character vs. Society – Conflict between protagonist and a larger societal system  

Character vs. Supernatural – Conflict between protagonist and fate, destiny, or divine forces.

Character vs. Technology – Conflict between protagonist and technology or machines
